Puzzles for toddlers Using LEGO and Sharpie

These puzzles for toddlers are very simple and easy to make, and you can carry them along in your busy bag for a fun play time in car or airplane. If you are searching for more Busy bag ideas, also try out these Reusable velcro stickers

Puzzles are very important for improving problem solving skills. They help children concentrate and focus on solving a problem. Toddlers often find it difficult to focus. But if you make them solve puzzles, they eventually start focusing, analyzing and thinking strategically. This helps them clear their mind and of course, they are rewarded and feel very happy and accomplished when they successfully complete their puzzle.

Since, these are puzzles for toddlers, I have kept them simple and every puzzle set has a different colored background. However, if you are making this for older kids, I have included a section at the end of the post for puzzles that are a little complicated. Do try those if your kids are 5 or older.

DIY Puzzles for Toddlers

Okay, now let us get back to the simple puzzles for toddlers. This activity uses LEGO blocks, which by the way I love and use for a lot of activities like this Learning Alphabet and Spellings Activity. I even use LEGO blocks with Kinetic sand which turns out to be quite exciting and innovative. However, if you are interested in more LEGO learning activities, I have made a pinterest board compilation for 50+ Learning with LEGO activities.

What you need:

  1. LEGO blocks
  2. Sharpie permanent markers (or any good quality colorful markers
  3. Your Busy bag
Lego blocks and sharpie pens

How to make:

1. Select similar sized LEGO blocks and join them together. Try using same colored and same sized blocks for a single puzzle so that the little ones can easily differentiate. (You can make simple puzzles using just two blocks, then try making a puzzle with 3 blocks and so on)

2. Now draw a shape or any object that your little one knows and can recognize easily. I made 4 puzzles: A circle, a star, a car and an apple.

3. Make sure that your drawing covers all the blocks that you have joined together.

4. Color your drawing.

5. Separate the blocks and fill them in a busy bag and get ready for your next trip.

DIY puzzles for Older Kids (5+)

For older kids, follow the same steps as above, but use different sized LEGO blocks and make a bigger puzzle. They will have fun figuring out what pieces go where.

To make it even more challenging, use different colored blocks for a single puzzle.

To make it super complicated, use small LEGO blocks. And make the puzzle using a large number of blocks. Small blocks in a large quantity will make the puzzle extremely challenging for the older kids.

In this puzzle, I made a rectangle shape with 11 blocks (which means an 11 piece puzzle set)  and made a colorful house using permanent markers (aka sharpie).

Since I used different colored blocks, the house looks multi colored where I used the lighter colored markers, even though I used the same (light green) for all the walls.

However, you will notice that the window, the door and the roof are solid colors. This is because I (strategically) used darker markers to color them (in order to create visual differentiation).

This puzzle will be difficult for younger kids to figure out, but older ones (5+) should have fun.

You can obviously make the puzzles as simple or as complicated as you like.

Our Memories:

My daughter is obviously too young for the house puzzle but she figured out the other puzzles in seconds. The apple puzzle took a little longer, but she was able to make it after 10 minutes of putting some thought and effort. I plan to make some intermediary puzzles for her soon.

I really like trying out different fun and creative activities with my daughter. Right below are some more fun activities  for you to try out with your kids:

1. Learning with Play dough activities
2. Sensory Kinetic Sand Activities
3. Learning Alphabet and Spellings using LEGO.
4. Indoor Water Activities

So, Are you going to try out this one?

And Super HAPPY 😀
